Ghanaian Engineer Helping Africa Make Shift Towards Sustainability - Justice Ohene-Akoto

Justice Ohene-Akoto is a multiple award-winning Ghanaian Professional Engineer and Researcher. He is the Ariel Foundation International (AFI) representative at the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). He is a Future Energy Leader (FEL-100) at the World Energy Council and the Co-Founder of an Energy Start-up named Maiseville Group. In this interview we discuss his passion for energy and sustainability, the work he is doing towards a more sustainable Africa and the role that Preparation, Mentorship and Multitasking skills building in university have played in his success.

The race towards a greener energy world seems to have reignited following the COP 26 and new warnings issued by scientists. For the continent with the youngest population and abundant resources (both renewable and non-renewable) the question still stands; Can Africa go green?

Justice Ohene-Akoto, a Ghanaian Electrical Engineer working for Volta Aluminium Company, is working towards possible solutions with bright minds around the world. His journey in engineering began when he topped his junior secondary school class in sciences and was adviced to take on sciences as opposed to liberal arts by one of his mentors. From there on, he found pleasure understanding the principles of maths and physics which later on spurred him towards Electrical Engineering. Consequently, whilst interning with companies he solidified his passion for power and energy.

In working towards a more sustainable Africa, not only is he a multi-published energy researcher, but he also works with an NGO, the Ariel Foundation International and will be representing them at the United Nations, Vienna.

Overall, he summarises his success as due to three things; Preparation, Mentorship and Multitasking skills building in university. Opportunities never knock twice and throughout his journey he utilises these three skills to maximise every single one of them.
